Florida State vs Alabama

No. 1 Alabama vs. No. 3 Florida State in an epic opener

ATLANTA (AP) — Officially, the College Football Playoff is still four months away.

No matter. This feels like a postseason game.

No. 1 vs. No. 3.

At a neutral site.

In a brand new stadium, no less.

Top-ranked Alabama, getting started on its annual quest for a national title after having the last one snatched away with 1 second to go, faces Florida State on Saturday night in a season-opening throwdown. It’s the first ever matchup between a pair of top three teams in The Associated Press preseason rankings — that could have an impact all the way through to the day they hand out those coveted playoff invitations.

Certainly, the winner gets a huge gold star on its resume.

Alabama’s Nick Saban did his best to pooh-pooh the significance of the game.

“Look, it’s a long season,” Saban said. “We’re going to have 12, 13, 14 games, maybe 15, I don’t know. What happens in the first game is certainly important, but we’re going to have lots of press conferences in this room and you’re going to ask me the same question when we play the next big game. The only difference is that the next game that we play is going to be the biggest game for me.”

As if a matchup between national championship contenders wasn’t enough to turn up the hype to full blast, this will be the first game that actually counts in Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the $1.5 billion marvel with an enormous, halo-like video board ringing the top of the massive structure.

There’s still the matter of the retractable roof, which isn’t fully functional and therefore will be closed on Saturday, no matter the weather. But that not-so-little glitch is unlikely to dampen the enthusiasm for this game, which will have a whole lot more riding on it that the first two events held in the glitzy stadium — a pair of Atlanta Falcons’ NFL preseason games.

And let’s not forget: This is same place where the national championship game will be held in January.

“I feel like it’s going to make us better in the long run because when teams open with cupcake games or cupcake teams, you don’t really get to see who you are or establish your identity,” Crimson Tide safety Minkah Fitzpatrick said. “But when you play teams like Florida State or Alabama, you can really see who you are.”

While the Crimson Tide came up just shy of its fifth national title under Saban, losing 35-31 to Clemson in a classic championship game that came down to a last-second touchdown pass, the Seminoles are looking to re-establish a bit of their swagger.

A season ago, Florida State was thoroughly embarrassed in a 63-20 rout at Louisville, and lost a pair of home games to North Carolina and Clemson by a total of five points. The national champion in 2013 and a semifinalist the following year in the first College Football Playoff, the Seminoles haven’t been serious title contender the last two seasons.

“This isn’t the only game,” defensive end Josh Sweat said, “but it definitely is a very big game, and everybody knows it is.”

Florida State Huskies and Alabama Scarlet Knights lock horns in a college football matchup tonight. The game kicks off at 8:00 PM EST in High Point Solutions Stadium, Piscataway, New Jersey. FOX Sports 1 will be providing the Tv coverage while the game can also be watched online live on fuboTV.

In the 2016 encounter between the Alabama and Florida State, the Huskies posted a 48-13 victory. Friday’s will be the second all-time meeting between the teams.
Florida State Huskies Team News

The 2017 roster is filled with young talents 40 freshmen are going to join the Huskies’ 2017 journey. Further, 26 sophomores, and just 16 seniors and 27 juniors make rest of the roster.

The Huskies offensive line broke all previous records in 2016 with 77 touchdowns scoring 585 points.

Jake Browing will be back as the starting quarterback for the Huskies. Browing posted a record-setting season, completing 18-of-27 passes for 287 yards and making three touchdowns.
Alabama Scarlet Knights Team News

Fifth-year senior Kylie Bolin has earned the starting quarterback job during the training camp. Also, Bolin will be captaining the team this season along with fifth-year senior defensive lineman Darnell Davis. Next in lineup will be fifth-year senior offensive lineman Dorian Miller and junior linebacker Deonte Roberts.

Fifth-year senior Janarion Grant will back in the lineup after missing later part of the last season.

Several freshmen namely wide receivers trio: Hunter Hayek, Everett Wormley, and Bo Melton are set to make their debuts. Sophomore

Sophomore Jawuan Harris, who made 39 receptions for 481 yards in 2016 will return as the leading receiver in the Knights.

Despite losing a good chunk of their core to the NFL draft this past spring, the Florida State Huskies are still a legitimate College Football Playoff contender heading into the 2017-18 season.

Budda Baker, Kevin King and speedster John Ross are all NFL players now, but Jake Browning is back under center for the Huskies, who went 12-2 last season, won the Pac-12 Conference outright and made the College Football Playoff in Chris Petersen’s third season at the helm.

Sam Darnold and the USC Trojans may be getting most of the preseason hype out west, but Browning and the Huskies are still a threat to keep the favored Trojans from winning the Pac-12 this season.

Alabama may not be the sternest challenge for the No. 8 Huskies out of the gate on Friday night, but there’s always a sense of intrigue when a west coast team flies to the other side of the United States to play a game. The Huskies will be heavy favorites in their season opener, but there’s always a sense of weirdness that lingers in games that aren’t played on Saturdays.

Oklahoma vs UTEP

Oklahoma hosts UTEP for a Saturday afternoon matchup to open the 2017 season.

Although the Sooners played great football from October through January last year, which culminated with a win against Auburn in the Sugar Bowl, their September performances left something to be desired. The Sooners were bullied in Week 1 against Houston and were put flat on their backs in Week 3 against Ohio State. Following these crushing losses, the Sooners had to do some soul searching and rebounded by reeling off 10 straight victories. With an experienced offensive line protecting star QB Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma is expected to extend their winning streak by winning the Big 12 and contending for a College Football Playoff spot.

Where: Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman, Okla.

When: 2:30 PM CT on FOX

Oklahoma Depth Chart

Week 1 offers a good tune-up opportunity for the Sooners with UTEP coming to Norman. The last time the Miners played the Sooners in 2012, they kept it much closer than expected but ended up losing 24-7. Prior to the 2012 meeting, Oklahoma played UTEP in 2002 and 2000 and outscored the Miners by a combined score of 123-14. This matchup will likely be a lot more like the early 2000’s matchups since Oklahoma is loaded with talent on offense and defense while UTEP is a middling Conference USA team that lost their all-time leading rusher, Aaron Jones to the NFL Draft.

Oklahoma vs UTEP Game info

Date: Saturday, Sept. 2nd

Game Time: 3:30 pm ET

Venue: Memorial Stadium, Norman, OK

Network: FOX

And here we go. It’s the Lincoln Riley era now at Oklahoma, and the scrutiny and spotlight will be blinding.

The Sooners are supposed to blow away UTEP, and if they don’t, the panic sirens will go off with the showdown at Ohio State up next before diving into a not-that-bad start to the Big 12 season.

While no one is thinking the Miners could shock the world in Norman, they need to at least show up and not get destroyed. It’s hot seat time for head coach Sean Kugler, but he’ll still be around if the team is two wins better and goes bowling.

As long as the game is merely competitive for more than a half, UTEP will have done its job.

As long as the game is a 50-point blowout, Oklahoma will have done its job.

One Reason Why UTEP Will Win

While the Miners struggled defensively last season, this year’s version has just enough good parts to be a whole lot better around LB Alvin Jones along with a veteran secondary. That doesn’t mean the Oklahoma offense can’t roll at will like it’s supposed to, but considering all the new parts to the Sooner mix, the UTEP D should be more than just a speed bump.

Even for Oklahoma, losing Samaje Perine, Joe Mixon, and Dede Westbrook hurts.

One Reason Why Oklahoma Will Win

Score early, and this could and should be over.

The Sooner defense should be able to close down a seemingly punchless UTEP attack that has to throw to keep this interesting. Unfortunately for the Miners, the secondary is the early strength of the OU D and should come up with its share of big plays.

The Miner O line is okay, but the skill players aren’t there to keep up in any sort of fight. or to mount any kind of a comeback.

Best player: Left guard Will Hernandez is on many preseason All-America lists and for good reason. The 6-foot-3, 330-pound Las Vegas native has started 37 consecutive games at the spot since his redshirt freshman season. Last year, he helped pave the way for Aaron Jones to run for a school-record 1,773 yards.

The case for the Miners: There isn’t much of one to be made. Oklahoma has plenty of questions: Who will be its primary running back? Who will be its featured receivers? How will the defense adjust to the 4-3? But UTEP is 18-31 under four seasons under Sean Kugler and doesn’t appear to be making much of a step forward. So the case for the Miners rests not on UTEP’s side but on Oklahoma’s. If the Sooners’ proven commodity on offense — quarterback Baker Mayfield — is forced to leave the game, things could become dicey not only for this game but the season. If OU’s defense struggles to put pressure on quarterback Ryan Metz, things could be difficult as well.

The case for the Sooners: Just about everything else. About the only thing UTEP did well last season was move the ball on the ground, and it has to replace its all-time leading rusher.

Oklahoma vs UTEP Prediction

UTEP vs Oklahoma College Football Game Prediction Week 1 Preview.

Final Score: Oklahoma 52, UTEP 13

Line: Oklahoma -44.5, o/u: 62.5

Game Prediction

With Baker Mayfield and the Sooners looking to start the season strong after a disappointing opener last year, I expect them to dominate the Miners from start to finish. Even if Oklahoma gives up some big plays on defense, the Sooner offense will be too much for UTEP.

A Little Background on Elon

Elon vs Toledo, Elon University (Elon,NC) is located a couple miles north of I-40 some 50 miles east of Wake Forest with Duke, UNC and North Carolina State all within 60 miles to the west. This relatively small private, non-sectarian, coeducational liberal arts school (enrollment some 6,000) has fielded a football team since 1909, joining the Colonial Athletic Association in 2014.

The university has made significant changes to its academic programs to becoming the #1 Southern University making “the most promising and innovative changes” as ranked by U.S. News & World Report in 2013. In 2012, Jay Mathews of the Washington Post named Elon “the #1 under-appreciated college in the nation.”

The football team, nicknamed the Phoenix since 2000, is trying to rise to the school’s academic successes. Taking the helm in January, Head Coach Curt Cignetti has his hands full. The Phoenix have suffered six straight losing seasons while dropping the last seven games of the 2016 campaign. Their 2-9, 1-7 in the CAA, puts them next to the bottom of the media’s league picks for 2017.

Coach Cignetti may be the guy. He was 53-17 the last six seasons as head coach of Indiana University of Pennsylvania. His 2016 IUP Division II team ranked first in passing efficiency, third in scoring, fourth in rushing  and 12th in total offense nationally. His experience includes serving on the coaching staffs of Alabama (2007-2010), North Carolina State, Pittsburgh and Temple.

The Phoenix on Offense

Elon vs Toledo# HC Cignetti and his new OC, Drew Folmar, have their work cut out with last year’s struggling offense one of the nation’s worst last season, ranking 115th out of the 122 teams in the FCS.

They will be implementing a new offensive system run by one or, perhaps, a combination of two freshmen quarterbacks. True freshmen, Davis Cheek and Jalen Greene, both 6’2” and 185#, are competing for the starting position. Both fit the dual-threat, up-tempo passing and running scheme.  Expect to see both on the field Saturday.

A bright spot is the offensive line with the deepest and most experience of any of the offensive units. This group allowed just a dozen sacks last year, tied for second best in the CAA and twelfth fewest in FCS. For the first time in half a dozen years, they had two running backs gain more than 500 yards each. The twelve-men rotation features seven at 300# with six of them 6’5” or taller.  Five are upper classmen so there’s size and experience up front.

The trio of running backs are each 5’9” and in the 195 – 210 pound range. Returning starters, Re De’Sean McNair (522 yds) and Malcom Summers (513 yds) will be challenged by red-shirt freshman Brelynd Cyphers who has shown an impressive combination of speed and shiftiness. Running backs will also be a featured part of the passing game.

The receivers, including tight ends, struggled last year with injuries and managed just 1,701 receiving yards with only four touchdowns.  The upside is that younger players got substantial PT. The group of nine wide receivers includes just one senior and two juniors. Four are 6’3” or taller but no wide receiver had more than twenty-six receptions last year. The one true freshman, Kortez Weeks, may push for playing time.

The half dozen tight ends group consists of one junior, two sophomores and three red shirt freshmen. Two returning tight ends, John Luke Arrington and Matt Foster, combined for 14 receptions and 110 yards last year.

Elon vs Toledo

The Phoenix on Defense

Elon vs Toledo# Under new defensive coordinator Tony Trisciani, the Phoenix will deploy a reconfigured 3-3-5 defense utilizing more defensive backs. The defensive scheme will feature a three-man front.  Statistically, pass defense, with 11 INTs, one returned for a touchdown, was a defensive strength last year.

The DL is a mixture of two seniors, two juniors, three sophomores and four true freshmen plus a redshirt frosh. Senior DE Dondre Howell, 6’4”, 249#, tied for team best 3.0 sacks last year. Junior Daniel Everett, 6’3”, 246# anchors the other defensive end position. The middle is plugged by sophomore NG Jordan Dollerson, 5’10”, 274# backed by freshman Tristen Cox, 6’’3”, 350#. This group will be challenged with the Rockets talented and deep offensive line.

Tennessee State vs Georgia State

Tennessee State vs Georgia State, The opening half of that doubleheader is a matchup between the two highest-ranked teams in history to open a season, No. 1 Alabama vs. No. 3 Florida State on Saturday at Mercedez-Benz Stadium, a game with as many subplots as a season of “Game of Thrones.”

Tennessee State vs Georgia State “National Championship game, week one,” said college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit, who will call the game on ABC.

“The anticipation is killing me,” FSU wide receiver Auden Tate said last week.

Alabama-FSU and Tennessee-Georgia Tech will be the 12th and 13th opening games in Atlanta, and the third doubleheader weekend in the history of the series.

Unabashedly, the sponsoring organization in Atlanta, Peach Bowl Inc., has produced a logo and marketed the game between the Seminoles and the Crimson Tide with the acronym “GOAT: Greatest Opener of All Time.”

Since there has never been a matchup of a preseason No. 1-ranked team against a No. 2 or 3 (the previous best game was No. 1 vs. No. 4, twice), they’re not wrong.

“We have the greatest opening game of all time, in the newest, grandest, state-of-the-art, world-class facility, a sell-out (ESPN) Game Day … it’s going to be an awesome atmosphere for everyone involved in college football,” said Gary Stokan, president and CEO of Peach Bowl Inc. “Then we’re going to do it all again on Monday. This is what we set out to do when we created the game in 2008, to have the signature kickoff for college football.”

Other cities challenge Atlanta

Except everyone else wants to get into the act. The 17th-ranked Gators face No. 11 Michigan in the Advocare Classic at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, (3:30 p.m., ABC), the ninth game in that series. Later that night in Houston’s Reliant Stadium, No. 13 LSU will play BYU in the Texas Kickoff, the fifth game in that series.

Orlando, Charlotte and the Washington D.C., area also have staged kickoff games, although not on an annual basis.

Beginning of the show: Former Georgia quarterback Fran Tarkenton gave pointed comments to DawgNation last week about why he believes UGA freshman quarterback Jake Fromm should play some this season in place of incumbent starter Jacob Eason. The Associated Press’ Ralph Russo also pegged the chances of Fromm replacing Eason by the end of the season at 25 percent. I’ll discuss what this criticism of Eason means for the second-year signal caller on the Monday show.

COLUMBUS — Ohio State brought 16 starters back from last season’s team and, for the most part, already knew who would play and where this offseason. But now, less than a week away from the season opener, the Buckeyes still have a few unsettled position battles.

Here are my bets to start when Ohio State takes the field Aug. 31 against Indiana.

Right guard

Branden Bowen. It felt as if every scholarship lineman who was not already starting was in the mix for this job at one point, but from the sounds of it, Bowen has been one of the team’s most improved players. Because OSU goes directly into a Big Ten road game, the Buckeyes’ coaches have to go with the player with whom they feel most comfortable. As of now, I think that’s Bowen.

Receiver

Binjimen Victor. Starting doesn’t mean all that much at receiver, where the Buckeyes will be rotating heavily, but I like Victor to replace the spot formerly held by Noah Brown. Austin Mack will play, too, though Victor’s 6-foot-4 frame makes him a valuable player on throwing downs and inside the red zone.

Strong safety

Erick Smith. The senior’s battle with Jordan Fuller has been close for the duration of training camp. Both players likely will see snaps early in the season, though I think Smith’s experience — he has played in 33 games in his career — gives him the nod in a week one road game.

Ohio State vs Indiana

Punt returner

Ohio State vs IndianaBoth. Demario McCall said last week that the Buckeyes were practicing with both he and K.J. Hill on the field at the same time. Urban Meyer noted this week how difficult it is to block a punt in today’s game, and Ohio State’s answer could be to add another returner. When the Hoosiers punt for the first time, chances are good both players take the field.
